new Aug.5,2019 Completion of the cannon nameplate.

To commemorate the transfer of the company headquarters and all industrial operations from the Yokota Factory to the Tanda Factory in 2004, master craftsman Shinichiro Ide cast a nameplate for the “Saga Domain 150-pound cannon (reconstructed)” that was installed in front of the new headquarters at the Tanda site. The nameplate, which includes information about the history of the cannon, was cast in May 2019 at the Yokota Factory. It was then mounted on the cannon after refinishing work on the cannon was completed.

The Saga Doman was in charge of protecting the port of Nagasaki since 1642 (the year Kanei 1 according to the Japanese calendar). However, in 1804 (Bunka 1) the Russian Rezanov delegation arrived by ship and in 1808 (Bunka 5) the English Royal Navy ship Phaeton entered Nagasaki harbor. Both of these incidents led to a military defensive buildup at the port of Nagasaki.

The 10th daimyo of the Saga Domain, Nabeshima Naomasa, was keenly aware of the need to utilize Western-style cannons as part of the increased defenses at the port of Nagasaki, and in 1850 (Kaei 3) he had a reverberatory furnace constructed at Tsuiji (the site of present-day Nisshin Elementary School) in order to attempt to construct the first iron cannons in Japan.

In 1853 (Kaei 6) ships commanded by American Commodore Perry arrived at Uraga, Japan. In the aftermath of this incident, the Bakufu (central) government sent an order to the Saga Domain for cannons that were to be installed along the battery at Shinagawa in order to provide increased defense of Edo harbor. In order to fill this order, the Saga Domain constructed an additional official government reverberatory furnace at Tafuse (a model of this furnace stands at the North Gate of Saga Railway Station). By 1856 (Ansei 3) twenty-five 24-pound cannons and twenty-five 36-pound cannons had been delivered and three additional 150-pound cannons were given as presents to the Bakufu government. Unfortunately, only one of these cannons is extant today.

This 150-pound cannon was recreated based on designs that are thought to have been used in 1856 (Ansei 3) to construct the first Armstrong cannons in Japan. It was made in July 2004 to commemorate the transfer of all of Toi Koki’s operations from the Yokota Factory to the Tanda Factory.
